Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award

Dr. Toshevi Sümi Totimi MBBS Award is an initiative of Dr. Toshevi Keditsu Sema, to be officiated the Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation in collaboration with Sümi Totimi Hoho, Nagaland. This award shall be presented annually to Sümi woman/women who qualify/qualifies to study graduate medical course (MBBS) though the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in India. This award comprises of a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh only).

Background:

Dr. Toshevi Keditsu Sema is the first lady doctor from the Sümi tribe of Nagaland, India. She completed her MBBS in the year 1977 from Guwahati Medical College. She has great concern for the education and growth of Sümi women particularly in the field of medicine. In line with this perspective, it is her desire to give cash award to any Sümi lady who qualifies to study graduate medical course (MBBS) though the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in India. As the Chairman and Managing Trustee of Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation, Nagaland, Dr. Toshevi seeks to uphold two of the organization’s main objectives (women empowerment and education) by presenting this award in her name. In collaboration with the Sümi Totimi Hoho, Nagaland, this award shall be presented annually.

  1. Award nominee is a woman born to a Sümi father by blood, belonging to the Sümi tribe of Nagaland
  2. Nominee qualifies the NEET examination of India
  3. Nominee is enrolled into MBBS course in a government medical college in India

The Sümi Totimi Hoho, Nagaland shall shortlist all Sümi women who qualify for MBBS through the NEET every year, starting from the year 2018. Eligible candidates shall submit an application letter along with a list of documents (see Annexure 1) to the office of Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation, Kohima. A screening committee shall verify the documents. However, the final selection of awardee(s) is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, and shall be presented only after the candidate(s) is enrolled into the MBBS course.

This award comprises of a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh only) and shall be given through the Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation. In case of more than one eligible candidate in a given year, the cash prize shall be divided equally amongst the awardees. In case the awardee is not present in Nagaland, the award shall be presented in absentia. In case there is no awardee for a given year, the amount sanctioned for the award will be reverted back to the Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation.

Applicants are required to submit an application letter addressed to the Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation, along with the supporting documents listed in annexure D, and a contact number for future correspondence. Applications must be sent through email to [email protected]. Documents shall be verified, and applicant intimated through email.

Last date of submission of applications for the year 2019 is 25th October 2019. Any applications submitted after the last date or incomplete applications shall not be entertained.

Mission

The Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Alternative Learning (CIKAL) has been set up to collate, document, conserve the indigenous knowledge of North East India, in order to

  1. pass it on to the next generation
  2. create opportunities for the people of this region to contribute to the body of knowledge for posterity
  3. provide them with the power to represent themselves and their stories
  4. facilitate healthy cultural exchanges with outsiders.

The term indigenous knowledge refers to the language, history, culture and knowledge of nature, agriculture, crafts, art and music as known, narrated and practiced by the indigenous people of North East India.

Objectives

  1.  To record largely oral accounts and narratives of language, history, culture, nature etc in vernaculars and English.
  2. To document agricultural practices, crafts, art-forms and artifacts through written, audio-video and photographic media.
  3. To collaborate with researchers, institutions and members of the public who wish to contribute already collected materials/data
  4. To create an archive of the resulting documents and materials and make it available to the public in transcripts and raw audio-video or photographic form.
  5. To curate these materials and produce publications for public consumption ranging from children’s books, graphic novels, coffee table books, commemorative books, memoirs, non-fiction books and textbooks and academic publications
  6. To publish an annual peer-reviewed journal on indigenous knowledge
  7. To formulate alternative pedagogies for the knowledge collected and collaborate with educational institutions to impart this knowledge
  8. To curate these materials and produce exhibits for public consumption
  9. To organize, workshops and seminars that will train both academics, as well as members of the public in oral history documentation
  10. To collaborate with academics, pedagogues, writers, artists, photographers, filmmakers and designers to create opportunities for the public to interpret and interact with the body of work in alternative ways.

  2. CIKAL undertakes commissions to archive old documents, photographs, audio-video and written materials pertaining to the people of Northeast India.
  3. CIKAL will accept and archive any data on the Northeast, provided that it is agreed that it will be available to the public.
  4. CIKAL undertakes translation from vernaculars to English and vice versa.

The HUSH Lecture Series

Self Awareness
Conscious Living

The HUSH Lecture Series is designed by Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation to address sensitive issues pertinent to teenagers and young adults. The objective of this lecture series is to raise awareness amongst high school and college students about health, self-awareness and conscious living. The HUSH lecture series consists of two lectures, 15-20 minutes each: 1. Sexual health: general overview of the reproductive system, menstrual cycle, sexually transmitted infections, and teenage pregnancy. 2. Tobacco awareness: introduction to tobacco products, tobacco related hazards with special focus on cancer. Each lecture is supported by visual aids and a power-point presentation, followed by an interactive session between resource persons and students. St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, Kohima

The first lecture was organized in collaboration with the Women’s Forum and Sociology Department of St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, Kohima on the 22nd of September 2017. Dr. Thejavinuo Keditsu and Dr. Keduovinuo Keditsu delivered lectures on “ Sexual Health” and “Tobacco Awareness” respectively in a workshop attended by more than 1000 college students. The lectures were followed by an interactive session where students were given the opportunity to raise queries and discuss with the resource persons.

On 22nd Nov 2017, an MOU was signed between St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, and Dr. K & T Keditsu Foundation, Kohima. The objective of this collaboration is to educate and sensitize the students and staff of the college on topics related to health awareness. The knowledge acquired through this initiative will not only benefit the students but will equip them to disseminate the information to their respective communities thereby serving a greater purpose.

Alder College, Kohima

Organized by the Women Development Cell, Alder College, Kohima, Dr. Thejavinuo Keditsu presented a lecture on “Female health issues” followed by an interactive session on the 3rd of March 2018. 200 female students and faculty members of the Women cell attended the lecture.
